The war for the next-generation of optical discs is over. Sony's Blu-Ray Discs (BD for short) has apparently won. Toshiba, creator and backer of HD-DVD, will stop production of the format in March.

Both discs have the ability to play High Definition video. However the two formats are not compatible with each other & are not compatible with current DVD players.

In order to play HD movies and content, a new disc & operating system was needed.

Netflix, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other major retailers got behind Blu-Ray in mid-February cementing Blu-Ray's win.
